To use Chapter 33 benefits at IU Bloomington, the student (veteran or dependent) must:
- Apply for benefits through the VA and obtain a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) or download a Statement of Benefits from the VA portal. Apply as early as possible.
- Register for classes.
- Submit a Request for Enrollment Certification (REC) to the IU office.
- Read the detailed Instruction Letter.
What Chapter 33 covers
Chapter 33 pays:
- Tuition and mandatory course fees (paid directly to IU)
- A monthly stipend paid directly to the student
Chapter 33 does not cover housing, dining, or other non-mandatory charges.
Out-of-state tuition
Under IU policy VPSO-08, some students may qualify for in-state tuition rates, reducing the need for Yellow Ribbon tuition matching. Eligibility is reviewed after your Request for Enrollment Certification is submitted.
Important
Eligibility requirements vary. The Center for Veteran and Military Students cannot determine eligibility. You must read the Instruction Letter for payment timelines, enrollment requirements, and your responsibilities.
