Resources for IU's military students and families
Military-connected students make up a small but close-knit group within IU. The more we hear from you, the better advocates we become.
Please connect with our team to self-identify as a military-connected IU student by emailing our office: iub.military@iu.edu.
Why self identify?
- You'll get support during your academic journey. Whether you need a Military Leave of Absence or help deciphering state or federal aid, connecting with our team early in your academic career establishes a relationship with the team so we give you better and faster assistance.
- You'll stay in the loop and will be the first to know about:
- Military education benefit updates
- Opportunities to connect with student veterans on campus
- CVMS events
- Internal and external opportunities
IU offers a Short-Term Military Activation policy for students who need to take a leave of absence.
- I have a drill and it conflict with my class schedule. What do I do?
IU’s Short Term Military Activation policy can be found on IU’s policy page. It is your responsibility to notify your course directors and provide them with official documentation in a timely manner concerning any short-term military obligations. - How do I apply for a Military Leave of Absence (MLOA)?
Under IU Policy VPSS-02, students have the option to withdraw (graded W) and receive a 100% refund of tuition and fees, receive an incomplete grade and complete coursework in collaboration with their instructor, or re-enroll in the same courses with no additional tuition/fees up to 4 years after release from Active Duty. Submit your MLOA here.
Kelley Direct (KD) MBA students have the same certification processes, but we submit KD GI Bill certification for KD students according to their quarterly semester calendars.
- What is the certification process?
- Certification will not be submitted until after all block enrollment for KD Core classes are split.
- Submit your Request for Enrollment Certification (REC) as soon as you are registered. The REC is required for each semester. This is the request that we use to initiate VA benefits each semester.
- What's next?
After you accept your admissions offer, you will receive an email with more detailed instructions, timelines, and requirements. - Will my program fees be covered for Kelley on Campus or Kelley on Location?
The VA will not pay for program fees for Kelley on Campus or Kelley on Location (e.g., BUKD-X503 or X513). These are typically $1,000, but you can contact the KD department directly to get more information. - Questions?
Questions about Kelley Direct scholarships offered in the admissions process should be addressed to through the Kelley School of Business by e-mailing kdirect@indiana.edu. These will be listed as a “fee remission” on your bill after you register for courses.

The Veterans Family Support Grant provides $2,000 per academic year (fall and spring semesters) to a veteran or service member who is supporting a child or children under 18 while enrolled full time at Indiana University Bloomington. (The grant amount is the same regardless of the number of children under 18.) The funds are unrestricted and may be used for any educational purpose.
Grants are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. We encourage you to apply when the application becomes available. The applications will remain open until October 15, and the grant will be applied to your bursar bill within three weeks after that.
Please note that this grant will be applied to any balance on your bursar bill first, then any remainder will be refunded.
- Eligibility: The child(ren) supported by the student may be biological or adopted, or (a) stepchild(ren). At least one dependent child must be under 18 as of the first day of the fall semester. It is not required that the child(ren) live with the student. If both a child’s parents are veterans or service members enrolled full time at IU Bloomington, each is eligible for a separate grant. The student does not have to use VA education benefits to be eligible for the grant.
- How to apply: Students must apply for the grant annually through the Center for Veteran and Military Students. The application is available beginning the first Monday in August for the upcoming academic year. To apply for the grant, a student must:
- Complete the online application form
- Provide proof of military service through a DD214, current military orders, a valid military ID card, or other official documentation
- Provide documentation of the student’s relationship to the child(ren) and the child(ren)’s age(s) through birth certificates, adoption papers, tax documents, or other official documentation
To apply for the ROTC Cadre Fee Remission, submit your ROTC Fee Remission Forms no later than one month before the student's bursar bill is due.

IU is in compliance with the Veterans Benefits and Transition Act of 2018.
IU Bloomington will not impose any penalty, including the assessment of late fees, the denial of access to classes, libraries, or other institutional facilities, or the requirement that a covered individual borrow additional funds, on any covered individual because of the individual’s inability to meet his or her financial obligations to the institution, when the delay is due to the delayed disbursement funding from Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) under Post 9/11 G.I. Bill® (Ch. 33) or Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment (Ch. 31).
In addition, IU Bloomington will not impose late fees if you are using current military entitlements such as Federal Tuition Assistance or State of Indiana Benefits such as Tuition and Fee Exemption for Children of Disabled Veterans (CVO).

If you see a late fee, do not pay it. Contact the Center for Veteran and Military Students and we will request the fee waiver. There may also be other Military-Affiliated reasons you can qualify for the late fee waiver, so please contact us to inquire. - What should I do if I have a registration hold?
If you cannot register because you are waiting for a benefit payment to IU, please contact us and we will request a temporary lift for the hold so you can register for classes.
